Nitrogen exists in the soil in many forms and can change from one compound to another very quickly. As a result of this nitrogen loss can be caused by various factors. Nitrogen loss in the soil typically results from leaching, denitrification, volatilization, erosion or run off as well as crop removal. Greater losses can occur when soils enter the spring season with recharged subsoil moisture, when more N is in the nitrate form, and when soils are warming.
